Give your teen the nutrition they need . . .
& watch them enjoy good health, higher energy levels, better emotional well being,
and greater success in achieving their life's goals!
Dear Friend:
If youre like most mothers and fathers, you probably feel challenged by the role of parenting your adolescent. There are so many decisions to make and it seems that so much is at stake. As parents, we want our kids to be happy, healthy, and successful in life and were willing to do just about anything to make that happen.
But the toughest part, it seems, is just knowing WHAT to do, isnt it?
. . .especially when it comes to the nutrition of our teens. Do we even have any idea of just what are the nutritional needs of teens? And where can we turn to find out? Who can we trust for answers?
Were Chris and Scott Sutton, and as parents of middle-schoolers ourselves, weve suddenly found ourselves thrown into an entirely new stage of parenting! Of course, weve felt challenged by all of the usual dilemmas of who our kids friends are, how they spend their time, and what kind of decisions theyll make, etc.
On top of this tough, we have felt concerned about how to protect our kids health and how to ensure that their bodies are getting all the nutrition they need -- so that they can be healthy now and long into the future.
We wanted to know what our growing children need for optimum health not just physical health but solid emotional well being that can help them navigate through the challenges of adolescence.
We went on a search for knowledge, and we found some answers that are making a valuable difference in our familys lives.
Wed like to share these insights with you so that you, too, can enjoy peace of mind, knowing youre doing all you can to foster a healthy and happy future for your teen.
In our research, we came across some sobering statistics:
In the past 20 years, the number of overweight adolescents ages 12 to 19 more than tripled, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Approximately 25% (or one in four children) are considered overweight according to the most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
A recent study showed a tenfold increase in type 2 diabetes in children between 1982 and 1994, and many of these children are only 11 or 12, just entering puberty!
Why such a drastic change? One obvious answer is our reliance on fast food and convenient processed food items. Never before in our society, have we, as a whole, consumed so many processed foods, which are basically devoid of nutrients.
Consider this:
American children and teens are getting 40% of their calories from extra fat and added sugars.
Less than 37% of 8th graders eat at least ¼ cup of fruit per day.
Nearly ¼ of all the vegetables consumed by children and teens are in the form of french fries.
Young people are drinking less milk than ever before, and theyve replaced it with sodas that leach calcium from young, growing bones.
Major beverage manufacturers heavily target preteens and teens in their advertising campaigns.
Most schools even contribute to the problem, putting soda and candy machines in the hallways to raise funds!
Average soda consumption in 13 to 18-year old males is three cans or more a day; 10% drink more than seven cans a day!
So whats the big deal?
Its not just about self-esteem and social issues. Obesity has become a major health issue! Overweight teens have a significantly higher risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult-onset diabetes, with good reason.
Until recently, only 1 to 2 percent of the children diagnosed with diabetes were found to have type 2 diabetes. Now however, recent reports show that as many as 45 percent of the new cases of diabetes in children are type 2 diabetes!
Obesity isnt the only health challenge, though, and a slim or average-size frame is no guarantee of good health.
Our bodies, no matter what their size, are under attack from the pollutants in our air, food, and water more so than in any other time in history.
So whats the answer?
Obviously, a healthy diet would be great. But given the typical lifestyle of a teenager and their desire to display their growing independence in all areas and especially in their food choices this is not very likely.
Our teens are spending less time around the family dinner table, and more time eating with their peers. Of course, this means that we have much less influence (and even awareness) over their food choices.
But even if you could get your teen to have a healthy diet, its simply not enough.
You see, even if you could get your teens to by-pass all the traditional junk-food fare and choose a healthy, balanced diet, the fact remains that its simply not possible for the body to gain all the nutrition it needs from diet alone.
In a large 26,000 person study, it was concluded that not one person received the nutritional requirements set forth by the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowances).
Even more disturbing though, is the fact that the RDA is designed as a precaution against deficiency diseases and has nothing to do with nutrition needs for optimum health. The RDA levels are the bare minimum of nutrition to prevent deficiency diseases like scurvy, rickets, and pellagra!
If youre really serious about protecting your familys health, then you should consider the RDA as the minimum wage of nutrition.
Simply put, the RDA of vitamins and minerals is not always enough to help prevent certain degenerative disease or to provide protection from oxidative damage (which occurs from pollutants, stress, sunlight, food, and even exercise, just to name a few).
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) much of the illness, disability, and death associated with chronic disease is avoidable through known prevention measures. These known prevention measures, can be boiled down to one simple action of taking a high-quality vitamin and mineral supplement.
Insufficient vitamin intake is apparently a cause of chronic diseases . . . Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements. --American Medical Association |
If vitamin supplements are considered important for adults, then how much more so for our kids during adolescence that time of growth which is particularly demanding on the body and when proper nutrition is absolutely crucial.
So heres comes the next challenge. How do we even begin to choose a vitamin?
How can we ensure that were choosing the best vitamin to meet the nutritional needs of our teens?
Even The Most Respected Nutritional
Authorities Disagree
Opinions differ - even among the most respected nutritional authorities as to exactly what should be in a nutritional supplement.
A brilliant solution
Well, what if you could take the opinions of seven recognized and respected authorities in the fields of science, medicine and naturopathy, and then combine their opinions to come up with the "ultimate supplement"? This would make things a little easier, wouldnt it?
We didn't do this, but we know who did. His name is Lyle MacWilliam, a biochemist and former Canadian Member of Parliament and Member of the Legislative Assembly for British Columbia.
He had a keen interest in finding the "best of the best" for himself and for his family.
So he spent four years researching and reviewing over 500 different nutritional products. Part of his research entailed coming up with this "ultimate supplement" formula - what he calls the "Blended Standard".
The seven published, respected nutritional authorities included:
Phyllis Balch, CNC
Dr. Michael Colgan, Ph.D.
Dr. Earl Mindell, Ph.D.,
Dr. Michael Murray, N.D.
Dr. Richard Passwater, Ph.D.
Dr. Ray Strand, M.D.,
Dr. Julian Whitaker, M.D
After combining their opinions to come up with the blended standard, he compared this blended standard with over 500 different supplements and ranked them highest to lowest. Talk about simplifying a confusing landscape!
With this information, you can confidently chose the best supplement for your teen, knowing that you're supplying them with the optimal levels of all the nutrients their cells need to help prevent disease and promote the highest levels of health...all based on the best opinions available in cellular nutrition. No fads, no miracle cures, no hype.
So which vitamin supplement came out on top?
After four years of research, reviewing over 500 nutritional products, I have concluded that USANA sets a new benchmark for nutritional excellence. USANA's Essentials formulation is the unsurpassed leader in advanced nutrition."
(Lyle MacWilliam, BSc, MSc, FP)
This is the product we take every day.
And we give our adolescents the equivalent, Body Rox, which is specifically formulated to meet the nutritional demands of their growing bodies AND provide them with the powerful antioxidants that will help them maintain ideal health.
We are convinced you will not find a higher quality supplement anywhere at any price.
And the more we researched USANA, the more impressed we became with the company and their products.
Put simply, if you want the best, you've found it!
USANA's supplements are one of the few listed in the Physicians' Desk Reference - this is a widely used reference by doctors looking for accurate information on prescription and non-prescription pharmaceutical products. It notes that their products are manufactured according to pharmaceutical GMP's and that they meet United States Pharmacopoeia guidelines for potency and uniformity.
World class professional and Olympic athletes are probably the most demanding - and skeptical consumers when it comes to nutritional products. Olympic athletes especially are worried that they may accidentally consume a banned substance -- having their dreams and years of hard work shattered.
That's why so many use and swear by USANA's products - not only is their formulation the best in the world, but USANA's products are absolutely pure - what's on the label is in the bottle and the only thing in the bottle!
In fact...
During the 2006 Winter Olympic games...
More than half of all the medals won by Canada and the United States came from teams using USANA's supplements.
To a world class athlete, maintaining optimal health is vital for peak performance.
Of course, we dont need to be world class athletes to benefit from optimal health. (Good thing, huh?)
"The results that I have observed in my patients since recommending the USANA Nutritionals has been nothing short of amazing. USANA has taken the sophisticated science of cellular nutrition and produced products that I believe will help change the health of this world." |
By taking USANA supplements ourselves and giving them to our kids, we know that were supplying our bodies with the optimal amounts of nutrients that will help keep us healthy and protect us from disease - it's that simple.

A Bright and Healthy Future
We all want the best for our kids, and we envision great things for their lives. Child psychologists and parenting experts agree that by the time our kids reach the age of 12 or 13, weve pretty much done all the disciplining that we can do, and it will be up to our kids to decide what to do with it.
Of course, this doesnt mean that we stop with our guidance, our love or our concern. We may be done with most of the traditional discipline, but we still can greatly influence their futures.
And, as we dream of bright futures for our teens, we must remember that good health is the first requirement to whatever life we, or they, dream of!
There is no easier, simpler step to take to insure life long health than to take a high quality multi-vitamin/mineral/antioxidant supplement every day.
To lifelong health!
Scott and Chris Sutton
P.S. As parents, we tend to put our children first, and many times we give little thought to our own needs. But you deserve good health as well.
And your health is the most unselfish gift you can give to others - yes, to others! When youre healthy, you can give your best to your family, your loved ones and to your friends - all those that matter most to you.
Invest in your own good health by ordering the Essentials for yourself and commit to taking them each and every day.
Start today! Every day that you deprive your body of the optimal nutrients needed for health and disease prevention you make it harder and harder for your body to keep you healthy and fight off disease. Give your body the tools it needs to give you the vibrant, healthy life you were meant to live.
An ounce of prevention
"With the help of USANA products, I have been able to bring real health to many patients who in the past have not been able to find quality products to maintain their health, despite numerous treatments from respected physicians." |
